Code for Sustainable Homes

Code for Sustainable Homes is the Government national standard for the design and construction of sustainable homes. It is constantly evolving to improve building performance and invite innovation.

Code Certification is divided through Six code levels. Code level six marking the highest level of sustainability, incorporating the Governments Zero Carbon Home standard.

The Code complements the Energy Performance certificates which have to be provided for all new homes and measures the building against a series of design categories which come together to rate the home as an environmental package.

The design categories considered are

1. Energy 2. Pollution 3. Water
4. Health & Well being 5. Materials 6. Management
7. Surface Water & Run off 8. Ecology    9. Waste

All Housing Association dwelling require a Code for Sustainable Homes assessment. A number of local planning authorities will also request a completed assessment. The requested Code levels will vary.

BBS Environmental Services offer a proactive and refreshing approach to achieving the required levels for its clients using the following process:

  1. An initial appraisal based on drawings and details submitted for consideration.
  2. A quotation for the work and assessment needed to achieve the level required
  3. Commencement of a ‘diary’ which is used to update progress as information is received
  4. Further information fed back to you on how the assessment is developing through the assessment
  5. When the Code level is achieved submission of a report to BRE
  6. Issue of the CfSH certificate

This system has progressed from our work on EcoHomes projects and has proven to be an excellent way of progressing assessments in a cost effective and efficient manner.
